Elementary Schoolhouse Experience

Field trips are an essential component of elementary programming that provide students the opportunity to see and learn from the community around them. The elementary program is a K-5 experience that is reviewed and revised to reflect high-quality programming for all students. We have been working with the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm to revise the one-room schoolhouse experience to offer a more inclusive and representative experience for all students. Throughout the revision process, collaborative meetings occurred with teacher and community constituents. The trip will be led by a docent and students will no longer dress up as part of the experience.

A Brief Description of The Revised Stoney Creek Schoolhouse Experience

Students will think like historians immersed in the setting of a typical country school from Michigan’s past.  They will use primary sources to explore what education was like in 1848 and compare it to a modern classroom. Through photographs, students will briefly look at class composition (age, gender, race, dress). They will interact with artifacts, such as an 1848 US flag, slate boards, McGuffey Readers, globe/maps, and even lunch pails. The students will learn one room school house etiquette and participate in a brief reading, spelling or math lesson. Weather pending, students will end the day with an outdoor recess with stilts, hoops and graces, and tag.

We are so excited to be partnering with the Positivity Project again this year.
What is the Positivity Project?
The Positivity Project, also referred to as P2, uses 24 character strengths to help students build positive relationships.  Positive relationships are the cornerstone to health, happiness and resilience.  Each week all children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade will be introduced and explicitly taught the same character strength.  Everyone in our Long Meadow family will be provided with the same definition for each character strength.  Children will soon be able to “see what the character trait looks like” through the use of videos, books, and discussions.
