Students, staff, and parents need to wear a mask when on school grounds
Long Meadow Elementary School and Rochester Community Schools recognize the importance of returning students to classrooms for in-person instruction while protecting the health and safety of our students, school staff, and broader community from COVID-19. The Long Meadow Return to Learn Guide further outlines information shared by Rochester Community Schools while providing guidance on processes specific to Long Meadow Elementary. This guide will outline how we will support student learning and safety. There will be some items duplicated on the week's newsletter and the Return to Learn Guide.
The creativity by staff is awesome. Check out some of our bulletin boards at Long Meadow.

What is the Positivity Project?
The Positivity Project, also referred to as P2, uses 24 character strengths to help students build positive relationships. Positive relationships are the cornerstone to health, happiness and resilience. Each week all children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade will be introduced and explicitly taught the same character strength. Everyone in our Long Meadow family will be provided with the same definition for each character strength. This common language along with classroom instruction tailored to each grade level, will help to provide students with a deeper understanding of each character trait. Children will soon be able to “see what the character trait looks like” through the use of videos, books, and discussions. Children will be able to identify character traits in themselves and others.
We are looking forward to working with families joining with us putting Positivity in Actions. Please see the schedule below.

Need Help or Social Emotional Support?
Long Meadow will be updating this section of the Newsletter to provide some social emotion and other supports through out staff. In this edition, we would like you to meet our social worker and school psychologist.
Happy October Long Meadow!
This has been a unique start to the school year, and we know it has been filled with anticipation, anxiety, stress, and I’m sure many other emotions as well. We wanted to take a moment to reflect on how we can best help our children with the ongoing pandemic, and how to make sure our children’s social-emotional wellness is intact. Below are three quick tips to help ensure that we have our eye on the ball.
The question you can begin asking yourself is “What is my child’s behavior telling me?” Are they interacting with the family? Are they sharing about their thoughts/feelings? Have any of their hobbies or interests changed that they used to find joy in, but no longer do? Are they in their rooms all the time? Are they isolating themselves from others? In the boxes below, you will find three tips to help you consistently monitor your child’s wellbeing.

In the boxes below, you will find three tips to help you consistently monitor your child’s wellbeing.
- Provide a consistent and structured schedule throughout their days (virtual or remote). Kids thrive on being able to predict what comes next in their day. Fear of the “unknown” can cause anxiety and sometimes unforeseen outbursts of anger or frustration.
- Research from the TLC Institute (National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children), tells us that if our child is able to establish a connection with one caring adult, they will feel safe. During Covid-19, it’s important that our kids feel a sense of safety.
- Unwanted behavior takes time to change. Some of these tools that we discussed can help with that, but in the meantime, be aware of your own expectations you may have placed on yourself or your children. We will all get through this, but it does take time, and that’s ok!
Our RCS social-emotional support teams, which consist of counselors, social workers and psychologists, will be operating in all learning environments, including in-person/temporary remote learning and the RCS Virtual Campus. These highly trained professionals are available for students and families in a variety of settings, and can be contacted through email, in-person or virtual meetings, and phone calls.
