LONG MEADOW GIVING TREE-AMAZON WISH LISTS
The Holiday season is fast approaching, and it is once again time for our Long Meadow Holiday Giving Tree. Since we are all learning remotely, we are using an Amazon wish list instead of our Holiday ornaments. Please consider our own Long Meadow families that might need a little extra help this Holiday season. Our families receiving these gifts are so appreciative of the generosity of our LM community. The Amazon wish list link will be provided below. There are several gifts to choose from but if you prefer to purchase a gift card or any other gift you may drop them off to me in the main office or in a bin in the vestibule marked "Holiday Giving Tree". All items must be received to Long Meadow no later than December 16th.
Thank you for your continued support of this very important program!

LONG MEADOW PTA & AHS PTA TEAMING UP WITH HELPING HANDS
Remote learning has been hard on a lot of people, especially younger students who benefit from a one on one connection. Our Adams Highlanders have offered to be mentors, tutors, friends and heroes to younger students from our feeder Elementary and Middle schools. We match students with similar interests for one on one Zoom or Google hangs, ideally once a week, but duration and frequency will be determined by the participants. Some student-generated ideas include:
- Read to/with younger students or create a virtual “book club”
- Drop materials off in advance and create makey makeys, art projects, crafts or science projects virtually
- Offer homework assistance and tutoring
- Share the love of a sport, hobby or musical instrument and “practice” virtually
- Be a friend - let them know you care. You’ll be surprised by how you can impact a child’s life.

During the pandemic, teaching and learning in Oakland County school districts has been happening in a mix of at-home and in-school settings. When school is remote or hybrid, parents and caregivers have been wrestling with how to foster their children’s well-being, nurture skills for school and life, and engage in academics with their children. The resources in this guide provide three high leverage practices for supporting learning at home. For additional real-time ideas, opportunities to collaborate with other parents, and continued support, join the free Partnerships@Home series.

What is the Positivity Project?
The Positivity Project, also referred to as P2, uses 24 character strengths to help students build positive relationships. Positive relationships are the cornerstone to health, happiness and resilience. Each week all children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade will be introduced and explicitly taught the same character strength. Everyone in our Long Meadow family will be provided with the same definition for each character strength. This common language along with classroom instruction tailored to each grade level, will help to provide students with a deeper understanding of each character trait. Children will soon be able to “see what the character trait looks like” through the use of videos, books, and discussions. Children will be able to identify character traits in themselves and others.
We are looking forward to working with families joining with us putting Positivity in Actions. Please see the schedule below.

Need Help or Social Emotional Support?
Long Meadow will be updating this section of the Newsletter to provide some social emotion and other supports through out staff. In this edition, we would like you to meet our social worker and school psychologist.
Promoting A Growth Mindset
There is much scientific research that backs the importance of having a growth mindset for both children and adults. Currently, our students are being faced with some of the most novel challenges and changes that most people do not experience in a lifetime. We want to continue to promote a growth mindset in order to help them be resilient in the face of adversity and believe that they can overcome anything.
“We have shown that what students believe about their brains- whether they see their intelligence as something that’s fixed or something that can grow and change- has profound effects on their motivation, learning, and school achievement.”
-Carol Dweck
What Do Studies Show?
Students with a growth mindset often focus on learning, believe in effort, and are resilient in the face of setbacks. Students with a fixed mindset may be more concerned with appearing smart and avoiding mistakes, think that needing effort to learn denotes low intelligence, and can become discouraged or defensive in the face of setbacks because they believe that setbacks reflect limitations in their intelligence.
How Can Teachers and Parents Help?
Research suggests that the brain can form new connections and strengthen existing ones through practice. Teachers and parents should help to explain to their children that intelligence is not something that is fixed or predetermined, but learned and practiced. Emphasize that failure is a part of the learning process and not something to be ashamed of. Encourage students to practice positive self-talk. For example, instead of statements like, “I am not good at this,” or “I can’t do this/this is too hard,” encourage statements like, “What am I missing?” or “I’ll try some of the other strategies we learned.”
Our RCS social-emotional support teams, which consist of counselors, social workers and psychologists, will be operating in all learning environments, including in-person/temporary remote learning and the RCS Virtual Campus. These highly trained professionals are available for students and families in a variety of settings, and can be contacted through email, in-person or virtual meetings, and phone calls.
